Penetrating Damp Treatment in Thanet and Canterbury
Penetrating damp occurs when water passes through the external fabric of a building and begins affecting internal walls, ceilings or finishes. Unlike rising damp, which travels upwards from the ground, penetrating damp normally moves horizontally or downwards from a specific defect.
The symptoms may become more noticeable during or after heavy rain. You might see dark patches on walls, peeling paint, damaged plaster, staining around windows or a persistent damp smell.
Damp Property Protection investigates penetrating damp problems throughout Thanet, Canterbury and the surrounding areas.

How We Investigate Penetrating Damp
A successful repair depends on finding the route through which moisture is entering.
Our technicians examine the location and pattern of the damp, the external condition of the building and any nearby defects. We may inspect brickwork, render, roof junctions, rainwater goods, window surrounds and internal finishes.
Moisture readings can support the investigation, but they should not be considered in isolation. The age, construction and ventilation of the property must also be taken into account.
What Causes Penetrating Damp?
Penetrating damp is usually associated with a fault in the exterior of the property. Possible causes include:
Cracked render
Damaged brickwork
Deteriorated mortar joints
Leaking gutters or downpipes
Defective roof coverings
Poorly sealed windows or doors
Failed flashing
Damaged external coatings
Plumbing leaks
High external ground levels
Coastal properties may also experience greater exposure to wind-driven rain. Water can enter through small defects that may not be obvious from inside the building.
Treating the Cause
The first stage of treatment is normally to repair the defect allowing water to enter. This could involve pointing repairs, sealing vulnerable joints, addressing defective rainwater goods or completing another suitable building repair.
Once the source has been resolved, affected materials may need time to dry. Damaged plaster or decorative finishes may also require replacement.
Applying stain block, paint or new wallpaper before the wall has dried will not resolve the underlying issue.
